Have you ever heard of the sermon on the mount? Some people might say it’s the most popular sermon that Jesus ever preached, but why is that? This sermon in particular has lots of Biblical principles and wisdom that influenced the church and Paul the Apostle in the writing of the letters.

It starts with the beatitudes, (blessings of the righteous) in which he blesses the following: the poor in spirit, mourners, the meek, they that hunger and thirst for righteousness, merciful, pure in heart, peacemakers, and the persecuted. Jesus then talks about them being the salt and light of the earth, meaning you shouldn’t hide your faith, instead you should be a beacon of Jesus’s love. Jesus talks about him coming to fulfill the law, not destroy it, and compares the law of old with the new law of Jesus as follows:

Anger	thou shalt not kill	Don’t be angry with your brother without cause.
Lust	Thou shalt not commit adultery	Don’t look after a woman with lust, you would already commit adultery if you do.
Divorce	Give her a writing of divorcement	divorcing causes the woman to commit adultery and whoever marries her commits adultery.
Oaths	Only vow to the Lord	Swear not at all; let your yes be yes and your no be no
Revenge	eye for an eye and tooth for a tooth	turn the other cheek
Enemies	love your neighbor and hate thine enemy	love those that hate you and pray for those that persecute you

In chapter 6, Jesus talks about praying in secret and not in the streets, for spiritual rewards are better than praise from man. Jesus also says the Lord’s Prayer and about fasting in private. Don’t store your treasures on earth where it can be corrupted, but instead lay up treasures in heaven. 24- The eye is the window to the soul, if you see the world with wicked intentions, you are wicked and full of darkness, but if you see the world through God’s eye, you are full of light. Lastly, the chapter talks about not worrying about worldly things, for example, worrying about what clothes your gonna wear, what your gonna eat, or etc. but seeking first the kingdom of heaven, and God will take care of those things.

Chapter 7 talks about not being hypocritical, but to remove the beam out of your own eye before you pull out the small twig in someone else’s. 7- God gives to those who ask. 12- You got to treat others like how you want to be treated. 13 Don’t take the broad path of the world where you’re following in all the directions that people lead you, but instead, take the narrow straight path where you are following God and the Bible and where He leads you. 15 Know prophets or preachers by their fruits (what they teach, do, or etc.) for good trees don’t produce bad fruit. 21 You can’t just do works in the name of Jesus, you have to believe on the Lord Jesus Christ to be saved.

In conclusion, Sermon on the Mount is about looking to Heaven instead of earthly things. Second of all, you can’t just go through the motions, God wants your whole mind, body, and spirit in worshipping Him in all that you do. Thirdly, God wants you to have love for all, even your enemies. Fourth of all, God provides, so you don’t need to worry about material things. Fifth of all, you gotta have secret devotion instead of telling everyone what you done for God. Six- you do the word of God and His commandments in all that you do. Lastly, you shouldn’t be a hypocrite; don’t tell others what to do when you aren’t doing that thing yourself.

This is just the surface on what the Sermon on the Mount talks about, and this is from the Son of God, this is not from a fallible man like Paul, but from Jesus Himself. Anyone who does not do what Jesus teaches here is foolish, like what Jesus said:

24 "Therefore whosoever heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them, I will liken him unto 
a wise man, which built his house upon a rock: 25 And the rain descended, and the floods came,
and the winds blew, and beat upon that house; and it fell not: for it was founded upon a rock.
26 And every one that heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them not, shall be likened unto a
foolish man, which built his house upon the sand: 27 And the rain descended, and the floods came,
and the winds blew, and beat upon that house; and it fell: and great was the fall of it."
